The festivities are behind us and sadly it’s time to come back to reality.
Instead of going through the post-Christmas blues, we should be welcoming January with open arms. The New Year should be a time that entrepreneurs look forward to. You get to wipe the slate clean and start the year with a fresh vision, strong goals, and the aspirations and drive to do better. New Year’s resolutions are the annual self-improvement tradition, the perfect time to plan and here at NACUE, we believe that this is especially fitting for all young entrepreneurs!
As any entrepreneur knows, setting goals is vital for growth and New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity to put these together and then into practice.
In order to help make 2018 a truly breakout year, we have constructed a handful of New Year’s resolutions to get you started.
1. Be Proactive
Use this brand New Year to evaluate your weaknesses and overcome them. If you think you could have done better for your business last year, then take a look at what your competitors are doing and see if they are targeting a section of the market that you haven’t yet explored. Perhaps your advertising strategy is very weak with no tangible results? Well don’t worry, there are many resources online, with tips and advice for improving your advertising strategy, just don’t be afraid to use them.
2. Look after your mental health
Although there are loads of pros in being an entrepreneur, the lifestyle can have a negative impact on your psychological well-being, so ensure you are monitoring your psychological health too. Check out this video from Sanctus ‘Keeping Mentally fit’, who we are very excited to have for the first time ever at the Student Enterprise Conference doing a workshop on ‘Mental Work-out in Start-ups’.
3. Do your homework - Learn from the best
As an entrepreneur, it is important that you put some time aside to assess future strategy for your business. There are plenty of resources you can use, articles that relate to your business or books that can broaden your knowledge in a particular aspect for your business. Why not have a look at ‘The psychology of selling’, ‘Girl Boss’, ‘The 4 hour work week’, ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ to name just a few.
4. Make the most of the events in your area
As an entrepreneur, it is important that you surround yourself with like-minded people. Do you know how to start up a conversation with potential partners, investors, employees, whoever it may be? Step out and get talking. If you find yourself tongue-tied and too shy to strike up a conversation with strangers, then perhaps you should read ‘How to win friends and influence people’.
If you’re based in the UK there are so many entrepreneurial events for you to take advantage of, including our Student Enterprise Conference, where you’ll be able to learn how to succinctly talk about your business.
If you haven’t done so yet make sure to buy your ticket soon.
5. Be S.M.A.R.T about it!
It’s great to come up with exciting goals but you need to be very specific about these. How likely are you to accomplish these? Analyse the goals that you have set yourself for the year, breaking these down into bite-size time frames for example six month, three months, monthly and daily goals. Allow yourself time to evaluate and redo your task as necessary, being realistic as well as self critical if you didn't achieve it. A very popular guide to use are the SMART GOALS.
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Timely
As an entrepreneur there are so many goals that you set for yourself throughout the year, you might not be keen in calling them New Year’s resolutions but whatever they are and however you do them, we all know that setting goals is extremely important when running your own business. Whether you pick one or two things from the above list or even make up your own goal, make sure that you action it because remember, “Words without action, is nothing”.
In complementary with the above, in the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting some New Year’s resolution from our fabulous speakers from NACUE’s Student Enterprise Conference in February. In addition to that keep an eye on our social media for specially priced tickets to join us at the conference. The offers start from Monday 8th January 2018, so make sure you have the date in your diary.
