Design Make Sell

Our additional products and services are aligned with practical learning concepts, enabling learners to apply their knowledge to practical situations whilst challenging them in a business scenario.

We understand the importance and need in developing front facing leaders and ensure our programmes are contributing to the requirements of annual student satisfaction surveys such as the National Student Survey (NSS), Destination of Leavers Higher Education Survey (DLHE) and Higher Education-Business and Community Interaction survey (HE-BCI) in supporting the recognition which educational institutions rightly deserve.

Design Make Sell provides students with a real-life business experience, performed over a 4-6 week period, enabling learners to design a product in a matter of weeks and later profiling and selling to their local community.

From Sports Therapy and Computer Science, to Fashion and Graphic Designers, Design Make Sell brings students of all disciplines together. NACUE will deliver bootcamps on ideas generation, value proposition and sales techniques before students work independently to source materials and build a brand. From there, students will have the opportunity to put their ideas to the test by selling them to the public.

This programme is suitable for both further and higher education institutions.

The programme will be collaborative, designed with input from the institution and will consist of:

  • Half-day consultation

The programme will be based on the needs and ambitions of the institution working directly with educators and students, building a programme with an industry expert, in alignment with student interest and ambitions.

  • Promotional materials to support student engagement

NACUE will provide customised promotional materials to drive signups for Design Make Sell which the institution are freely able to use. Additionally, institutions will have a dedicated NACUE member of staff who will be working on this programme.

  • Execution of bootcamp weekend

NACUE will facilitate the weekend bootcamp (on campus) to support on the theoretical knowledge required to design a product and take it to market including training, facilitation of discussions, mentoring, presentation and *prize giving (if desired). Options to arrange catering are subject to an additional fee.

  • Guidance and ongoing support for individual teams

Post bootcamp weekend, NACUE will be available to support the individual teams throughout the production and manufacturing phases to signpost students to the simplest, low-cost options to create a viable product within the designated timescale. NACUE will be available on campus 2 adhoc days for drop in’s, if desired.

Additionally NACUE will support the ongoing administration and email communication with students to ensure minimal institutional staff time. Additionally, NACUE is happy to facilitate a deposit system in tracking attendance.

  • Stakeholder Management

NACUE will source a suitable location for students to sell their products within the local community at the end of the programme. This should be within local vicinities to the institution if possible, enabling learners to communicate with the local community about their handmade products and the talent incubated within their institutions.

  • Project packs and printed material

NACUE will provide all the required materials throughout the course of the weekend, including briefing packs for all participants. All delegates will receive a hand signed certificate of achievement from the host and facilitators, capturing the skills obtained throughout the course of the weekend.

Through Design Make Sell your students will develop the following enterprise and employability skills, aligned with ‘personal development’ as part of the National Student Survey (NSS):

    • Presentation and communication skills
    • Time management
    • Team working and collaboration
    • Decision making skills
    • Negotiating skills
    • Product design
    • Business finance management

This is an exceptional opportunity for students to gain valuable business knowledge, employability skills and the competencies to succeed in entrepreneurship.

Delegates involved will additionally have the opportunity to gain practical experience in relation to enterprise skills, pitching, raising investment, solving business problems and team based learning.

Design Make Sell is designed to inspire students to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career option through working on a real life, risk free startup project. Students will be supported by experts on this specific project, on an existing project or gain the knowledge on how to create a future startup.

* Prize pot of up to £1,000 for the student groups, to be provided by institution.

Testimonials

“We partnered with NACUE on this great initiative and we are delighted at how motivated the students were. They really stood up to the challenge and couldn’t wait to sell their wares in Cambridge in December. This is another innovative way that we at Anglia Ruskin are supporting our enterprising students to give them the skills, knowledge, understanding and mind-sets that will equip them for the real world of work or to set up their own business.” Marcia Baldry, Entrepreneurship Support Manager, Anglia Ruskin University
